The University of Pittsburgh is seeking a High Achievement Center Aide. Center Aides help with homework and tutoring during our study hall, serve as instructional assistants during academic enrichment, and monitor scholars. Center Aides attend an orientation and training preceding Afterschool Academy’s start. Periodic trainings and professional development opportunities throughout the Academy will be required as well. This position involves direct work with scholars, administrative tasks, and monthly staff meetings.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Study Hall & Academic Enrichment Block
◾Assist in the supervision and management of an intensive study hall of up to 60 students
◾Review students assignment notebooks upon their arrival; help them to prioritize daily assignments, along with setting realistic time-tables with prioritized task-lists for longer-term projects
◾Ensure that homework is completed to a level of high quality by all students. High-quality assignments are characterized by a high level of accuracy, an organized and clear presentation, and answers that indicate thinking beyond the surface level
◾Assist scholars in preparing for upcoming quizzes, tests, and projects and coach them to develop strong study skills
◾Review scholars assignments for accuracy and re-teach necessary concepts
◾Track scholar progress using the centers established tracking mechanisms
◾Attend Center Staff meetings during which individual scholar needs are discussed and plans are put in place to ensure progress. Monitor and evaluate these individual scholar plans
◾Assist teachers during academic enrichment block
◾Work with small groups as needed
◾Substitute, as needed, for absent mentors

Operations
◾Set up and clean up snack/light dinner for students
◾Set up space and prepare materials for whole center meetings
◾Assist with the facilitation ofcenter meetings and events
◾Assist with management of students during activities, in moving between activities, and at dismissal time
◾Complete administrative tasks as requested, including data entry, filing, mailings, copying, etc.
◾Place phone calls to students families as needed regarding attendance and other issues
◾Assist with center clean-up and close-down at the end of the evening

Job Requirements

This position is a part-time seasonal position, working approximately 10-12 hours per week, Monday through Thursday 4pm-7pm for the duration of Higher Achievements Afterschool Academy from late September through early May.

Child Protection Clearances

The following PA Act 153 clearances and background checks may be required prior to commencement of employment and as a condition of continued employment: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance.
