GUIDELINES FOR UNDERGRADUATE TEACHING ASSISTANTS IN THE DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS AND ASTRONOMY This document details guidelines for the use of Undergraduate Teaching As- sistants (UTA) in the Department of Physics & Astronomy. These students will help sta the departments \Resource Room", a room where students in the intro- ductory physics courses may come to ask questions pertaining to these courses. Prerequisites To be considered for a UTA position, undergraduate students must satisfy the following prerequisites  The student must be a major in the Physics & Astronomy department and have at least 13 credits of Physics and/or Astronomy courses (including the current term)..  The student must have a GPA > 3:2 in PHYS/ASTRON courses.  The student must have an overall GPA > 3:0.  The student must have obtained the following grades in introductory physics courses. (1) A- in PHYS 0475 or A in PHYS 0174 or A+ in PHYS 0110 (2) A- in PHYS 0476 or A in PHYS 0175 or A+ in PHYS 0111 Duties A student will sign up for speci c hours in the Resource Room at the beginning of the term in which they will be serving as a UTA. The UTA is expected to be present in the Resource Room for the same hours every week for the duration of the term. The UTA is expected to be able to help students who visit the Resource Room with questions relating to their Physics and/or Astronomy courses, but the UTA will not solve homework problems for the students. The Departments Director of Graduate Studies or his/her designate will conduct a training session at the beginning of the year for students stang the Resource Room. All UTAs will be expected to have attended this session. Other Possible Duties. It is possible that the department may decide to utilize a UTA in activities other than stang the Resource Room. The UTA must still satisfy the prerequisites listed above. Faculty wishing to propose these activities should do so in writing to the Department. The proposal will be reviewed by a committee composed of the Chair of the department and the Undergraduate and Graduate program directors or their designates. 1 2 UTA GUIDELINES These duties could involve: (1) Facilitating discussion groups or other forms of collaborative learning ac- tivities as part of regularly scheduled class sessions. (2) Facilitating student study sessions or tutorials in support of a particular class at times other than regular class sessions. (3) Assisting the instructor in secondary activities of teaching. The duties will not involve: (1) Leading regular class meeting, lectures, seminars or ocial recitation or laboratory sections. (2) Grading papers, quizzes, or exams. (3) Any activity related to the assigning of nal grades. (4) Any work unrelated to ocial departmental courses.

Job Summary

The University of Pittsburgh is currently seeking a Physics and Astronomy Resource Room UTA.

A student will sign up for specific hours in the Resource Room at the beginning of the term in which they will be serving as a UTA. The UTA is expected to be present in the Resource Room for the same hours every week for the duration of the term. The UTA is expected to be able to help students who visit the Resource Room with questions relating to their Physics and/or Astronomy courses, but the UTA will not solve homework problems for the students. The Departments Director of Graduate Studies or his/her designate will conduct a training session at the beginning of the year for students staffing the Resource Room. All UTAs will be expected to have attended this session.

Other Possible Duties: It is possible that the department may decide to utilize a UTA in activities other than staffing the Resource Room. The UTA must still satisfy the prerequisites listed above. Faculty wishing to propose these activities should do so in writing to the Department. The proposal will be reviewed by a committee composed of the Chair or Associate Chair of the department and the Undergraduate and Graduate program directors or their designates.

Compensation:
Subject to available funding, the department may offer an hourly wage for the time the UTA spends in the Resource Room. Alternatively, the student may elect to receive course credit for their efforts at the rate of 1 credit for every 3 hours/week the UTA works in the Resource Room.

Job Requirements

To be considered for a UTA position, undergraduate students must satisfy the
following prerequisites:
 The student must be a major in the Physics & Astronomy department and
have at least 13 credits of Physics and/or Astronomy courses (including
the current term).
 The student must have a GPA > 3.2 in PHYS/ASTRON courses.
 The student must have an overall GPA > 3:0.
 The student must have obtained the following grades in introductory
physics courses:
(1) A- in PHYS 0475 or A in PHYS 0174 or A+ in PHYS 0110
(2) A- in PHYS 0476 or A in PHYS 0175 or A+ in PHYS 0111

These duties could involve:
(1) Facilitating discussion groups or other forms of collaborative learning activities as part of regularly scheduled class sessions.
(2) Facilitating student study sessions or tutorials in support of a particular
class at times other than regular class sessions.
(3) Assisting the instructor in secondary activities of teaching.

The duties will not involve:
(1) Leading regular class meeting, lectures, seminars, or official recitation or
laboratory sections.
(2) Grading papers, quizzes, or exams.
(3) Any activity related to the assigning of final grades.
(4) Any work unrelated to official departmental courses.

Child Protection Clearances

The following PA Act 153 clearances and background checks may be required prior to commencement of employment and as a condition of continued employment: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance.
