Job Summary

The University of PIttsburgh is seeking an America Reads Challenge Tutor. The mission of America Reads Challenge is to assist kindergarten to third grade students improve their reading ability to enable them to read independently by the end of third grade. America Reads Challenge Tutors provide one-to-one instruction for students one or two days per week. Tutors will provide children with instruction to improve their reading and comprehension. Tutoring reinforces and expands concepts presented by the teacher. Tutors work in local afterschool programs.

Two options are available to accommodate schedules, tutors may enroll to participate in tutoring once or twice per week, and must maintain a consistent schedule.

Students are required to submit weekly lessons plans and attend monthly professional development training (one Saturday per month).

Job Requirements

-Tutors must have an interest in working with children. Experience working with children preferred.
-Tutors must be motivated, resourceful, dependable and willing to engage in professional development opportunities.
-Enthusiasm and respect when tutoring children.
-Creative when developing lesson plans and reading selected books.
-Attention to detail regarding paperwork.
-Excellent reading skills and willingness to share love of reading.
-Commitment to working with underserved and/or diverse communities.
-All tutors must submit hours weekly via the PittServes Volunteer Portal.

Child Protection Clearances

The following PA Act 153 clearances and background checks may be required prior to commencement of employment and as a condition of continued employment: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance.

2 Days per week:
Tuesday & Thursday, 3:00 – 6:00pm

1 Day per week:
Tuesday, 3:00 – 6:00pm
Thursday, 3:00 – 6:00pm
