Position Details

The Department of Music of the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a tenure-stream Assistant Professor position in Musicology to begin September 1, 2018, pending budgetary approval. A Ph.D. in a relevant field must be in hand by the time of appointment.

We are seeking a music historian of the highest caliber, ideally with specialization encompassing post-1800 Western music and the music history of another region, language tradition, or diaspora. Facility with global historical, transnational, postcolonial, ethnohistorical, intersectional or other innovative approaches to musicology is especially welcome. The successful candidate should complement the research and teaching profile of the current faculty, and should be prepared to engage across the sub-disciplines as well as with other outstanding departments, the Humanities Center, and interdisciplinary programs across the University.

The Department of Music offers the Ph.D. in composition/theory, ethnomusicology, jazz studies, and musicology, and the B.A. in music. Duties will include active research and publication, teaching graduate and undergraduate courses, directing theses and dissertations, participating in the profession, and sharing in administrative responsibilities.
