Position Description

The Office of Institutional Advancement (IA) works to meaningfully engage our expansive network of alumni, and supporters, with the university of today. The University of Pittsburgh is seeking qualified Major Gifts Officers who will play a critical role in the overall success of our Major Gifts Leadership (outright and deferred) and Annual Gifts Teams within various schools across campus. The incumbent will work closely with the Director of Development, or other senior leadership, to develop and implement strategy for individual gift prospects and donors to meet short and long-term goals of the department.

The primary objective of the Major Gifts Officer is to develop long-term relationships built on a firm understanding of donors’ interests, passions and values. The responsibilities are limited to fund-raising at the $100,000+ level from alumni and include: a) cold call qualifications, b) identifying and completing cultivation tasks, c) creation of strategies leading to gift agreements, d) creation of endowment and pledge agreements, e) identifying and completing stewardship tasks, and f) maintaining accurate records in the ADVANCE database system.

Minimum Related Experience Level Required 2-3 years experience
Additional Education and/or Experience Essential to the Position

Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s preferred. At least two years in a major gift environment, evidence of direct contact with major gift donors, interaction with academic deans/department heads in a development context. Superior verbal and written skills. Must be able and willing to travel extensively outside of the Western Pennsylvania area. Must have experience with stewardship techniques.

The following PA Act 153 clearances and background checks may be required prior to commencement of employment and as a condition of continued employment: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance.
