Job Summary

The University of Pittsburgh is seeking an Undergraduate Mathematics Teaching Assistant.
Duties include:
1. Lead a Math 0200 (precalculus) or Math 0031 (algebra) recitation once or twice a week. In very special circumstances, you may be eligible to lead a Math 0120 (business calculus) recitation.
2. You are expected to solve problems with students during recitations, explain mathematical processes clearly, and prepare them for both quizzes and exams. You are expected to be interactive and prepared to teach.
3. You are expected to spend 2-3 hours per week preparing for recitation. This includes communicating with the instructor of the course, reading the textbook, and writing solutions to problems.
4. You are expected to communicate with your instructor regularly and follow their directions.
5. You will administer quizzes, collect them, and return them to the instructor of the course for grading. You may also be asked to administer worksheets and write solutions.
6. You will hold 2-3 office hours per week in the Math Assistance Center.
7. After holding your office hours, you may work as a tutor in the Math Assistance Center and help in any course where you have received a B+ or higher. You are not expected to do this, though.
8. You are NOT expected to grade exams, quizzes, or homework. You may help the instructor enter grades and organize data, but you may not assign grades.
9. You are expected to alert your instructor and/or the MAC director if any problems arise in recitation.

Job Requirements

1. High School Diploma or GED is required.
2. Strong preference will be given to students who have completed Math 220, Math 230, Math 240, and/or Math 290 with a B+ or higher in each course.
3. Must be proficient in pre-calculus and basic algebra.
4. Must have a strong work ethic.
5. Must be patient, willing to answer questions, and willing to take the time to be clear in explanations.
6. The application process is comprised of two rounds. If your application is accepted you will be contacted by the MAC Director for a secondary interview, which will most likely not be in person.

Child Protection Clearances

The following PA Act 153 clearances and background checks may be required prior to commencement of employment and as a condition of continued employment: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance.
