Working Title Web Developer/Programmer
Job Classification Systems/Programmer III
Department Name 35242-Med-Biomedical Informatics
Job Type Staff
Position Number 0134799
Hiring Range TBD based on qualifications
Position Description

This Web developer and programmer will be a member of a technical team supporting Web development and software application development in the Department of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI).

The successful applicant must be proficient with HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript, Python, SQL, model-view controller web frameworks, and widely used libraries such as jQuery and D3, and must be able to demonstrate proficiency by means of code samples or detailed discussion of implemented systems. The ability to design and implement websites or software applications is required. Experience with best practices in modern software development, including agile development practices, source-code control systems, testing and test-driven development, code reuse and API design, and documentation is highly-desirable. Experience in maintaining website software and content management systems is also highly desirable. Experience in any or all of these areas is helpful; willingness to jump in and learn unfamiliar tools is essential.

As a member of a team conducting novel biomedical research, a successful applicant will need to look beyond the code, building a deep understanding of the problem domain and resulting implications for software design. Detailed work with end users and other stakeholders will be required, often with the implicit requirement of learning the details of a new and unfamiliar field. Success in this position will require working closely with customers when necessary to articulate plans, problems, and solutions clearly to team members, and then being willing to react quickly and appropriately when plans go awry.

At DBMI state-of-the-art software tools and systems to support cutting-edge biomedical research are being created and used daily. DBMI is currently working on projects involving big data including large-scale electronic health record data, genomic data, information integration for personalized medicine, creating distributed research data networks, and related topics united under the common theme of translational informatics: using information systems to move basic scientific insights into meaningful medical care. In addition, DBMI is the home to a large graduate training program in biomedical informatics. Most projects and the training program maintain websites, and the successful applicant will maintain these websites.

Candidates for this position will ideally bring a combination of technical expertise; curiosity and willingness to learn about new domains; and a willingness to work flexibly with inter-disciplinary teams. Technical expertise should be based in educational background (at least a Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information science, or related fields), professional experience (at least 3 years software development) and demonstrable interest and success in learning new technologies and applications.
