Position Description

This programmer will be a member of a technical team supporting data transfer to and from data marts and a data warehouse maintained at the Department of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI).

The successful applicant will have completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science or Information Science and subsequently worked for a minimum of 2 years developing progressively more complex applications as a member of a software development team. The successful applicant must be proficient with Java, Python and SQL and must be able to demonstrate proficiency by means of code samples or detailed discussion of the implementations. The ability to design at the level of a software module application interface is required. Experience with Unix shell scripting, Oracle and MySQL is preferred. Previous knowledge with medical vocabulary and coding standards such as ICD, SNOMED and RxNorm would also be a plus, but not a requirement. Previous experience with ontologies, and Natural Language Processing is also preferred. Excellent verbal and written skills are required so that that programmer can work closely with customers when necessary and can articulate plans, problems, and solutions clearly to team members.

At DBMI state-of-the-art software tools and systems to support cutting-edge biomedical research are being created and used daily. DBMI is currently working on projects involving big data including large-scale genomic data, information integration for personalized medicine, advanced tutoring systems for medical training, semantic modeling of drug interactions, creating distributed research data networks, and related topics united under the common theme of translational informatics: using information systems to move basic scientific insights into meaningful medical care.

Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Science, or other related area.

Two to three years of experience programming software for projects not related to school coursework. Participates in complex analysis, evaluation, and design of systems.

Maintains and contributes to programming standards. Implements and maintains major modules of complex systems.
Technical qualifications: Python or Java programming, preferably both, creating complex applications. Responsibility for design at the level of a module. Knowledge of web services architectures. Experience on both Windows and Linux preferred
