Reporting directly to the Executive Associate Director, this position serves in a senior management role as the Director of Communications in the Office of the Director at the University Center for International Studies. The incumbent is responsible for the overall effectiveness of marketing communications for PittGlobal, which includes the globalization of the University, as well as UCIS and its units: Nationality Rooms Program; Office of International Services; Study Abroad; and, Centers for Latin American Studies, Russian & East European Studies, Western European Studies, African Studies, Asian Studies and Global Studies. Responsible for strategizing, planning and executing comprehensive communications for campus-wide internationally related events and the effective distribution of targeted information to relevant audiences both on and off campus.
The Director of Communications will design and implement communication strategies that establish PittGlobal as the primary source for international content and data including but not limited to: e-marketing, print marketing, direct response marketing, social media, public relations and other communications with internal and external constituents. Incumbent will craft overall messaging strategies to support PittGlobal objectives and goals including developing speeches and written products. He/she will be responsible for overseeing development of branding effort and then managing the day-to-day implementation.
The Director of Communications is responsible for managing day-to-day communications, designs/executes/measures strategic internal and external communications programs including: drafting media and communications materials and messages, participating in issues management, and integrating seamlessly within the University of Pittsburgh Communications team.
|Minimum Related Experience Level Required||6-9 years experience|
|Additional Education and/or Experience Essential to the Position||
Bachelor’s Degree in journalism, communications, public relations or related field. Masters Degree preferred.
6-9 years of related communications experience, ideally in an academic setting, covering areas such as website content, newsletters, and donor communications.
Ability to take complex information and transform it into exciting and useful messages, disseminating it to the right audiences through the best distribution channels.
Highly collaborative style.
Experience developing and implementing communications strategies.
Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communications skills.
Strong track record as an implementer who thrives on managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently.
Relationship builder, with the flexibility and finesse to manage by influence.
High energy, maturity, and leadership skills with the ability to serve as a unifying force and to position communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels.
Sincere commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including physicians, researchers, staff, donors, and other supporters.
Self-starter and entrepreneurial. Enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives.
Knowledge of the academic environment and faculty culture, particularly of academic medical centers.
