Position Description

The University of Pittsburgh’s Office of University Communications is seeking a qualified Communications Manager to provide strategic expertise to departments and schools throughout the University of Pittsburgh.

The Communication Manager will be responsible for focusing on finding compelling and newsworthy stories throughout campus, and then pursuing creative ways to disseminate Pitt’s most impactful news to key audiences, locally, nationally and internationally. The Communication Manager will write stories for the University’s online news service, proactively pitch story ideas to members of the media, arrange interviews with faculty and help manage media needs during events or emergencies. This candidate will serve as liaisons to University partners as they access an array of communication services provided by the office, including marketing, website services, social media, internal and external communications and event promotion. In facilitating these relationships, the Communication Manager will seek to understand the goals and opportunities that lie within various areas of campus and provide strategic communications solutions that create the greatest impact within an evolving, multimedia news landscape. This candidate is expected to organize engaging packages for the University’s news platform that include well-written stories, relevant visuals and creative multimedia ideas.

Duties require regular engagement with University partners and knowledge of the most exciting happenings in that subject area. A thorough understanding of academic specialties available for the purposes of pitching expert voices to media is also expected. Relationships with local and regional reporters, editors and other news media personnel are essential, specifically those who specialize in the topics addressed in the colleges, departments, and schools in the assigned best areas.

The Communication manager will follow topics that various journalists are working on and proactively pitch story ideas that lean into their interests and promote Pitt’s expertise. A fast-past news environment requires the team to read a variety of publications, both local and national, and keep up with the news cycle. Tracking and sharing resulting media hits with University partners is part of the customer service we provide.

Additional Education and/or Experience Essential to the Position

Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, journalism, or one of the sciences; master’s degree or equivalent experiential education is a plus.

The following PA Act 153 clearances and background checks may be required prior to commencement of employment and as a condition of continued employment: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance.
