Position Description

The department of Anesthesiology at the University of Pittsburgh is seeking a Laboratory Technician.

The department of Anesthesiology research encompasses clinical trials, basic research, and translational research. We are a national leader in academic anesthesiology research, consistently ranked as one of the top anesthesiology departments in the nation in NIH funding.

The Laboratory Technician will be in charge of the overall function of the laboratory. S/He will be expected to take care of laboratory maintenance, safety and inspections required by the institution. Besides, s/he will also be in charge of performing and supervising the common lab duties needed for the good functioning of the lab (such as washing the lab dishes, autoclaving the consumables, keeping track of the lab inventory and do the ordering when needed). Good organizational and communication skills are required.
The other main duty of the lab technician will be to assist the research team in their experiments. S/He will participate in behavioral experiments involving rodent care, handling, injections, basic surgery and observation. S/He will also do rodent tissue preparation for immunohistochemistry (immunostaining and confocal microscopy), biochemistry (western blots, ELISAs…etc.), pharmacology and molecular biology experiments. A basic knowledge of cell culture methods is strongly recommended because the laboratory technician will also perform in vitro experiments with different cell lines. The successful candidate will be expected of improving the existing lab protocols when needed and of optimizing new protocols or techniques that may be needed. Electrophysiology and mouse breeding skills are a plus. Duties include acquiring data from subjects, processing, archiving and performing analysis of behavior, imaging and biochemistry data.
The successful candidate has the necessary interpersonal skills to work effectively with other members of the laboratory and of the department. This position will provide opportunities for contributing to publications, project management, and grant applications.
