Position Details

The Architectural Studies program at the University of Pittsburgh seeks to fill a new full­ time, 3-year NTS (Non Tenure Stream) position to begin in August 2017. Based on a review of the successful candidate’s performance, the position may be renewable.

The University of Pittsburgh offers a B.A. in Architectural Studies through the Department of History of Art and Architecture in the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences. Students enrolled in the major complete one of two tracks in Design or Preservation. The number of majors is around 100; on average 10 to 12 apply to graduate school every year. http: //www.arch.pitt.edu/people/alumni.php. Students have the opportunity to double major in Environmental Studies, Studio Arts, Urban Studies and other fields. Architectural Studies majors may complete a certificate in Civil Engineering; students in Civil & Environmental Engineering have the option of pursuing a Minor in Architecture – Design that incorporates courses in design studio and architectural history.

The program is eager to attract candidates for this position whose training, teaching experience and research bridges from architecture to another discipline, including but not limited to: engineering, computer science, environmental sustainability, historic preservation, public policy, sociology, urban studies. The successful candidate will participate in on-going program-building discussions with colleagues in other divisions of the university and with partners in the region. Pittsburgh is a complex and dynamic city supporting a diverse array of community organizations, cultural institutions, and design professionals that offer limitless scope for learning, research, and collaborative interaction.

The teaching load will be 3 courses or the equivalent in other duties, in each of the fall and spring semesters and will include the introductory seminar for majors, Approaches to the Built Environment. The successful candidate will teach courses in architectural history/ theory/practice (depending on their specialization) that complement and expand the existing curriculum. The position incorporates responsibility for fostering student development and professionalization, including management of an annual, 1-credit pro­ seminar for majors; participation in an annual field trip and reviews of student design work; advising students applying to graduate programs.
