The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine has recently formed a new Department of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI, see http://www.dbmi.pitt.edu). DBMI seeks to recruit faculty (open rank) to develop research programs in bioinformatics, imaging, intelligent systems, natural language processing and ontology. Senior faculty with developed programs in other areas would also be considered. The successful candidates will be expected to participate in the biomedical informatics training program. Background: The University of Pittsburgh has a long history of biomedical informatics research as well established NLM sponsored training program (since the 1970’s), and formed a pan-institutional Center for Biomedical Informatics in 1996. DBMI is a merger of three pre-existing centers: the Center for Biomedical Informatics, the Center for Pathology Informatics, and the Benedum Oncology Informatics Center. The new faculty member(s) will join internationally-recognized colleagues in bioinformatics, biomedical informatics, biosurveillance, clinical trials informatics, health services research, intelligent systems, natural language processing, tissue banking informatics and translational informatics. Major areas of research among current faculty (see http://www.dbmi.pitt.edu/research.html) in these areas include translational informatics (newly funded CTSA site, see http://www.ctsi.pitt.edu), oncology informatics (Cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid or caBIG), proteomics informatics, modeling complex medical decision making, patient safety initiatives, computational modeling of cancer, the study of human computer interactions, dental informatics, nursing informatics, library information sciences and pathology informatics. The University has considerable computing resources and space devoted to Biomedical Informatics and has close working relationships with groups at Carnegie Mellon University and the Pittsburgh Supercomputer Center as well as the new Departments of Computational Biology and Structural Biology. There are opportunities for extensive collaborations with in the University, Medical Center, as well as opportunities for participation in the related graduate programs. Minimum Objective Qualifications: The academic faculty appointment will be within the Department of Biomedical Informatics. Individuals should have a Ph.D. or M.D. or equivalent in their field, which may include (but is not limited to) medical informatics, bioinformatics, computer science, information sciences, imaging subspecialties, mathematics or medical ontologies. We are very interested in recruiting senior level faculty to lead programs in bioinformatics and vocabulary/ontology. Rank and Title: Open rank and title, which will be dependent upon the goals as well as qualifications of the individual successful candidates. Positions are tenure track.
